Is Phantom Blade Zero a Souls-Like?
Last verified · PBZ Wiki
No — not in the way the label is usually meant, even though Phantom Blade Zero's Steam page carries a Souls-like tag. S-GAME calls it a Kungfupunk action RPG. The differences are structural: Sha-Chi is not a stamina bar, three difficulty modes ship in the box, and the combat rewards sustained offence rather than patient spacing.
Phantom Blade Zero — Quick Facts
| S-GAME's own label | Kungfupunk action RPG |
|---|---|
| Steam tags include | Action, RPG, Wuxia, Dark Fantasy, Souls-like, Hack and Slash |
| Stamina bar | ❌ No — Sha-Chi gates only powerful options |
| Difficulty options | ✅ Three modes, including story-focused Wayfarer |

| Closest comparison | Sekiro's parry rhythm, not Dark Souls' spacing |
Where the Label Comes From
Two sources. First, the Steam store page carries a Souls-like tag alongside Action, RPG, Martial Arts, Wuxia, Dark Fantasy and Hack and Slash. Second, the visual grammar — a lone swordsman, a gloomy world, boss fights with readable tells — is the grammar FromSoftware popularised, so people reach for the nearest word.
S-GAME's own description is different: a Kungfupunk action RPG, a term coined by director Soulframe Liang for the game's blend of wuxia, Ming-dynasty setting, steampunk and folk horror. That is not marketing evasion. The mechanics genuinely diverge.
Six Mechanics Compared
| Mechanic | Typical soulslike | This game |
|---|---|---|
| Core resource | Stamina — gates dodging, attacking, blocking | Sha-Chi — gates only heavy attacks, blocks and Phantom Edges |
| Resource recovery | Passive, by disengaging | Switching main weapon mid-combo, fully |
| Intended rhythm | Patient spacing, punish windows | Sustained pressure, weapon rotation |
| Difficulty | Usually fixed | Three modes, story-focused tier included |
| Assists | Varies; often co-op summons | Summons available, single-player |
| World | Interconnected, often open-ended | Seamless non-linear regions, ~10 key-lock gates |
Is Phantom Blade Zero Like Sekiro?
Closer than to Dark Souls, and for a specific reason: both games make the parry the centre of combat rather than an advanced option. The white-flash parry serves the same function as Sekiro's deflect — it converts an enemy's turn into yours.
The divergences are real though. Sekiro gives you one sword and builds mastery through depth; S-GAME gives you 30+ main weapons and 25 Phantom Edges and builds mastery through rotation. Sekiro has no difficulty selector; this has three. Sekiro's posture system pushes you toward aggression through a damage model, while Sha-Chi pushes you there through a resource that only refills when you change weapons.
If you liked Sekiro's rhythm but wanted variety and an accessibility floor, this is the closer fit. Full Sekiro comparison.
So Is Phantom Blade Zero Hard?
Adjustable. On Wayfarer it is a story-forward action game. On Hellwalker the enemy AI adapts to your attack patterns, which is a harder problem than a stat multiplier because your reliable answers stop being reliable. Sixty-Six Days is the ceiling.
The phrase that fits better than “soulslike” is demanding but not gatekept. The systems expect you to learn them — the Sha-Chi rotation in particular is not optional — but the game gives you a tier where learning them is not a prerequisite for finishing the story.
Why the Label Still Gets Used
Two honest reasons, neither of them marketing. Steam tags are partly community-driven, so a game that looks like a soulslike accumulates the tag regardless of its mechanics. And “soulslike” has drifted from describing a design lineage to describing a mood — a lone warrior, a bleak world, bosses with readable tells.
By that looser meaning the label fits fine, and there is no point arguing about vocabulary. What matters for a purchase decision is whether the mechanics transfer, and on that the answer is specific: the parry reflex transfers, the stamina discipline does not, and the instinct to master one weapon actively works against you.
