What Is Phantom Blade Zero?
Phantom Blade Zero is a third-person action RPG built in Unreal Engine 5 by S-GAME, a studio headquartered in Beijing with additional teams in Shanghai, Hong Kong and Los Angeles. It first appeared at the May 2023 PlayStation Showcase and spent three years in development before landing its final release date.
You will also see the game written Phantom Blade 0, shortened to PBZ, and misspelled Phantom Balde Zero — all of them refer to this game, which S-GAME publishes as 影之刃零 in Chinese.
The setting is the Phantom World — a Ming-dynasty China refracted through wuxia, steampunk, dark fantasy and folk horror. Director Soulframe Liang coined the word Kungfupunk for the mix. It is not a soulslike in the FromSoftware sense, even though it borrows the vocabulary of one; the pacing is faster, the healing is more generous, and the combat is built around uninterrupted offence rather than patient stamina management. Our is it a soulslike? breakdown compares the two systems mechanic by mechanic instead of arguing about the label.
Phantom Blade Zero in 60 Seconds: the Combat Loop
Everything in Phantom Blade Zero combat orbits a single resource: Sha-Chi. Heavy attacks, blocks and Phantom Edge activations all draw from it, and it does not regenerate on its own. What refills it is aggression — and, critically, switching your main weapon mid-combo restores Sha-Chi completely. You carry two main weapons and two Phantom Edges, so the intended rhythm is: press with weapon one, dump Sha-Chi into a Phantom Edge, swap to weapon two, refill, keep pressing.
Defence is colour-coded. A white flash marks an attack you can parry for a clean counter. A red flash marks a killer move that must be dodged or repositioned out of with the ghostep dash — blocking it will not save you. Reading those two tells is the difference between a fluent fight and a fast death. Beaten enemies can drop their signature weapon and technique, so the arsenal grows through combat rather than through shops.
Full breakdowns: the Sha-Chi system, parry and deflect timing, and build and loadout planning.

- Check the demo status first. There is no demo and none has been announced, so the eleven-minute official gameplay trailer above is the closest thing to a hands-on look.
- Read the combat overview. Sha-Chi and weapon swapping are unusual enough that going in blind wastes the first hour.
- Check which edition you actually want before pre-ordering — the Deluxe upgrade is cosmetic, and the physical Collector's Edition is capped at 8,000 units worldwide.
Release Date, Platforms and Editions
Phantom Blade Zero releases on October 29, 2026, after a 50-day delay from its original September 9 date. It ships simultaneously on PlayStation 5, Steam and the Epic Games Store; the PS5 version holds a twelve-month console exclusivity window, which is why an Xbox release cannot arrive before late 2027. PC is not affected by that clause and launches day and date.
Pre-orders opened August 11, 2026. The Standard Edition is $59.99 and the Digital Deluxe is $69.99, adding two outfits, a digital artbook and the soundtrack. Both carry the same pre-order bonuses. If your machine is the question rather than the price, the PC requirements page has the official minimum and recommended specs — note that an SSD is mandatory at both tiers.
Weapons, Phantom Edges and Builds
The full game ships with more than 30 main weapons and 25 secondary weapons called Phantom Edges. Main weapons cover the wuxia spread — jian longswords, heavy dao blades, dual daggers, staves, rope darts, bows and gauntlets — and each has its own upgrade path and signature techniques.
Phantom Edges are the stranger half: cannons, lances, axes, hammers and throwing weapons that consume Sha-Chi on activation. Several double as traversal tools, opening roughly ten key-and-lock gates scattered through the world. The full weapon index lists every confirmed entry in one sortable table.
Story, Characters and Donnie Yen
Soul is an elite assassin of The Order, framed for murdering its patriarch. A duel with his former ally Zuoshang leaves him dying; a mysterious healer implants a tainted heart that buys him exactly sixty-six days. Those days are the clock the whole story runs on, and side quests can redirect it — S-GAME has confirmed eight endings.
Donnie Yen has been attached since 2023 as creative consultant, and in this game he performs Mó Yuan through facial and motion capture. Action director Kenji Tanigaki and combat director Yang Liu shaped the movement alongside Shaolin and Emei practitioners. See Donnie Yen's role in full.
